Changes to Light Rail Ticket Vending Machines

The ticket vending machines have improved screen sequences that simplify the functions for our riders. The design eliminates the need for the customer to predetermine whether he/she should pay a Local fare $1.75 or Express fare $3.00. Instead, the customer selects their destination station and the machine determines the correct fare to be paid. Plus, once the correct fare has been determined, the customer is asked how many tickets are to be purchased, then the total money to be deposited is calculated and shown on the screen. This system is easier for our riders to understand and also gives group riders the opportunity to purchase multiple tickets up to ten at a time in one simple transaction.

Here's how the new screen options work:

  • Select the type of ticket
  • Select your destination. Simply find the station that is your destination, and press the appropriate button.
  • Select the quantity of tickets to be purchased. The TVM calculates your fare automatically.
  • Insert your money into the machine and take your ticket.

Wheelchair accessibility

Light rail is 100 percent wheelchair accessible. Ramps are located at each station. Wait at the top of the ramp for the train to stop. Operators will help you board and exit the train.

light rail on the move Going your way

You're going places... and so is RTD light rail. Whether you're heading to work or school, spending the day at your favorite LoDo shops and restaurants, or enjoying a night on the town at one of Denver's fantastic special events, light rail is going your way.

Once you've tried it, you'll find that light rail is a fast, comfortable and convenient way to go. Just hop on board and enjoy the ride - without the hassle and expense of driving and parking.

Best of all, as RTD's light rail system expands, so do your transportation options. You can ride light rail from the suburbs to the city and make connections to other RTD services. Hop on RTD's FREE MallRide at Union Station or at bus stops all along the 16th Street Mall. Get off at Market Street Station and transfer to another RTD bus or take skyRide to Denver International Airport. It's all part of our metro-wide transit plan to get you where you're going.

It's easy to get going with light rail. Here's how:

Button 1 Go to your nearest light rail station.

You can board or exit light rail at 36 stations.
19 light rail stations have park-n-Ride lots where you can park your car for free. In addition, many stations are served by convenient bus feeder routes and call-n-Rides that circulate throughout nearby neighborhoods. For more information on park-n-Rides and bus routes, call 303.299.6000

Button 2 Buy your ticket.

You must have a validated ticket before you board light rail. To purchase a ticket, use the ticket vending machines (TVMs) located at each station. Your ticket will be automatically validated with the date and time when you purchase it from the machine.

If you have a valid RTD pass or bus transfer, you do not have to buy a ticket; you have already paid for your ride on light rail. If you wish to use a ticket from an RTD 10-Ride Ticketbook, you must validate your ticket in the ticket validator near the ticket vending machine at the light rail station.

Your validated light rail ticket can also serve as a bus transfer if you need to complete your trip on an RTD bus. If you're starting out on a bus and then moving to light rail, be sure to ask for a transfer when you board the bus. Light rail is part of RTD's metro-wide transit system.

Button 3 Locate the correct light rail line going in the direction you want.

Overhead signs next to the light rail tracks indicate which direction the train is going: Northbound or Southbound.

Signs on each train indicate the light rail line and the final destination for that train.

If you are traveling into downtown Denver on the D, F or H Line, any train you board will stop at every station as far as 18th/California. However, only designated trains on the D Line continue along Welton Street to the 30th/Downing Station, so check the destination sign to see how far the train is going. If it says "30th Avenue," it will travel up Welton Street to the 30th/Downing Station. Otherwise, the train will turn around on 19th Street for a return trip south.

Button 4Stand behind the yellow warning strip.

Yellow strips located next to the tracks indicate the safe distance from the trains. Stay behind the strip until the train stops. Arriving trains stop at all stations, so there is no need to signal the operator. Once the train has stopped the doors open automatically, or you can open the door by pushing one of the lighted green buttons.

Button 5Let other passengers exit before you board the train.

It's easier and faster for everyone if you allow other passengers to get off the train before you board.

NOTE: If you are riding light rail to large special events, there may be crowds waiting to board at some stations. Please form orderly lines, and be patient if you have to wait a few extra minutes until a train arrives with available space. We make every effort to get you to your destination quickly and safely. We also ask that you observe all restrictions concerning items that you are not permitted to carry into entertainment and sports venues or onto RTD vehicles, such as bottles, alcoholic beverages, large coolers, etc. Contact each venue for specific regulations.

Button 6 Have your ticket, transfer or pass ready for fare inspectors.

Fare inspectors circulate through the light rail cars to check for valid ticket, transfer or pass. When asked, just show your validated ticket, RTD pass, upgrade, zone receipt or transfer. You may also be asked to show your ticket, pass or transfer at light rail stations in areas identified by "Fare paid Zone" signs.

Button 7 Get off at your stop.

You don't have to signal the operator; your train will stop at every station along the route. To exit, the door will open automatically or push the "Open Door" button located near the stairwell at each door.
