Tips for purchasing Light Rail tickets:
Tip #1
Before boarding, purchase light rail tickets at the ticket vending machines located at the light rail stations. Ticket vending machines will automatically calculate the correct fare based on the selected destination.
Tip #2
A Local pass holder must purchase an upgrade when traveling in more than two zones. For example, a Local AB pass holder travels from zone A to C. In this case, three zones have been traveled. The Local AB pass holder must purchase an upgrade prior to boarding the train at the ticket vending machine. The pass holder pays only the difference between a two-zone fare and a three-zone fare.
Tip #3
If traveling to an adjacent zone not listed on your monthly pass, obtain a zone receipt at a ticket vending machine. For example, a Local BC pass holder traveling from zone C to D, or from zone B to A, would need to obtain a zone receipt. This is still considered local travel as long as the pass holder only travels in two adjacent zones.
The RTD Light Rail system is divided into four fare zones. Light rail fares are determined by the number of zones a passenger travels in for each one-way trip.
If a passenger travels in one or two adjacent zones, it is considered local travel and is a local fare. Three-zone adjacent travel is an express fare and four-zone travel is a regional fare.
Tip #4
RTD makes it easy to buy passes and ticketbooks. Visit the RTD Online Store or fill out this Pass-by-Mail order form and mail it back to RTD.
It’s only fair to pay your fare
Fare inspections by police officers, RTD fare inspectors and security officers can take place anytime—even at light rail station or bus stops. To avoid being fined, all passengers must be able to produce proof of correct, valid fare payment while riding any RTD vehicle. Fare evasion is a criminal offense that can result in a hefty fine and a permanent criminal record.
Violators are issued a warning at the first offense and will receive a citation for violating state law thereafter. Pre-paying the citation or being found guilty in court will become a permanent criminal record for theft of public transportation services.
