November 2012: Angela Williams
Each month, RTD encourages passengers to nominate a bus driver or light rail operator who goes above and beyond to make their experience memorable. This month’s winning nomination goes to SkyRide AS bus driver, Angela Williams. The AS travels east and west from the Stapleton Park-n-Ride to Denver International Airport.
Her nomination was submitted by Randi Rycroft, who was impressed with Angela’s helpful and friendly attitude.
"I would like to commend the driver on this bus. I was having difficulty with the parking payment kiosk (it wouldn’t read my credit card) and the driver must have noticed. She came up to the kiosk to let me know that I could use my mobile phone to pay from the bus and then told me how. She was afraid I would miss the bus if I didn’t pay that way. I was very grateful for her help because I hadn’t realized I was cutting it close to the time I needed to be at DIA, and if I had missed the bus, I would have missed my flight. The driver obviously couldn’t have known that but she went out of her way to help me in the most friendly and cheerful manner.
If you have an employee rewards program, I ask that she be recognized. This level of customer service is rare these days in any business and I hope you will thank her on my behalf."
After receiving the commendation from Randi, we wanted to know more about Angela, and she graciously agreed to answer a few of our questions.
How long have you worked for RTD and have you always been a Bus Driver?I’ve been with RTD for 19 years, my first six years as a Telephone Information Center operator and the past 13 as a driver
What were you in a previous life?
Hmmm let’s see, it’s been so long...
What do you like best about your job?
Paydays, and I get to meet some nice, funny, weird and just crazy people.
If you could listen to music while working, what type?
New and older style jazz
If you could deck out your train, what style?
I don’t know but something with comfortable seating and better lighting at the driver’s seat when the bus is not running.
If you could change your uniform color, what color or does brown/gray go with your eyes?
Brown goes with my eyes, but who wouldn’t look good in a grey and black combination?
What type of service would you drive if given the choice and/or favorite service to drive or operate?
The AS is my favorite route to drive and I would love to drive it full-time but a good 150 drivers would need to retire or do something else to give me a chance at driving it all the time. I probably will retire first.
What are your favorite hobbies or activities?
Cooking, going to plays and at one time I was a very good runner.
