January 2013: Kelly Knafla
Each month, RTD encourages passengers to nominate a bus driver or light rail operator who goes above and beyond to make their experience memorable. This month’s winning nomination goes to Interlocken/Westmoor Call-n-Ride bus driver, Kelly Knafla. This Call-n-Ride serves Flatiron Crossing and areas of Interlocken and Westmoor Technology Park.
His nomination was submitted by Michael Mascarenas, who was impressed with Kelly’s caring and friendly attitude.
"I am writing to express my gratitude for your morning Interlocken Call-n-Ride driver, Kelly. Since I began working in Broomfield, Kelly has gone above and beyond to not only drive the route, but make it enjoyable. Every morning when he picks up me and my fellow riders we’re greeted with a smile, which helps brighten early mornings. Anytime I start a conversation with him, he always responds and shows interest in the topic. He is also very knowledgeable of his route and territory, which is impressive as the service seems more like a taxi because people call and schedule rides. His knowledge also extends to the other routes that use the Park-n-Ride. He has helped many new customers get to the right bus when they were not sure where they were going. I’ve never been late to work with him, even when he is running late. On top of all of this, Kelly has passed on the same courtesy, friendliness, and work ethic to his new fill-in driver that he’s been training. This not only ensures an excellent experience with Kelly, but also when he has time off. This is why I would like to nominate him as driver of the month for RTD."
After receiving the commendation from Michael, we wanted to know more about Kelly, and he graciously agreed to answer a few of our questions.
- How long have you worked for RTD and have you always been a Bus Driver?
- Seven years, and yes always as a bus driver
- What were you in a previous life?
- I have no idea what I did in a previous life, so it must not have been too exciting.
- What do you like best about your job?
- I like working with people and being able to help them.
- If you could listen to music while working, what type?
- If I could listen to music at work it would be rock music because I get up way too early.
- If you could deck out your train, what style?
- I would deck it out with easy chairs and an espresso machine, which would be nice in the mornings.
- If you could change your uniform color, what color or does brown/gray go with your eyes?
- We wear gray shirts and it would be nice if we had some variety.
- What type of service would you drive if given the choice and/or favorite service to drive or operate?
- I don’t think I would change to another route. I like the challenge and my passengers.
