July 2012: Philip Janifer

Each month, RTD encourages passengers to nominate a bus driver or light rail operator who goes above and beyond to make their experience memorable. This month’s winning nomination goes to Route 5X driver, Philip Janifer. The 5X travels east and west from the Federal Center Station to the Civic Center Station.

His nomination was submitted by Amanda Horvath, who was impressed with Janifer’s exceptional customer service.

"I am writing to compliment the dedication, professionalism, and enthusiasm that Janifer displays daily while driving the 5X route. He has gone above and beyond the duties of a bus driver by learning the names of each of his afternoon riders on this route. He remembers details about us, has no problem making small conversation, but above all, he is an excellent, punctual, and safe driver. I’m so sad that he will be transferred off my route when the new service changes go into effect, but the riders of his new route will be so lucky to have him. RTD is lucky to have someone like Janifer on their team of drivers. He always brings a smile to my face and makes my commute home that much more enjoyable!”

After receiving the commendation from Amanda, we wanted to know more about Janifer and he graciously agreed to answer a few of our questions.

How long have you worked for RTD and have you always been a driver?
I’ve been a driver for RTD for 7 years.

What were you in a previous life?
A twinkle and a smile on my parent’s face.

What do you like best about driving?
I enjoy the elements of multi-tasking and getting to know the riders, they become like family.

If you could listen to music while working, what type?
Anything inspirational that everyone can enjoy.

If you could deck out your bus, what style?
Well, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

If you could change your uniform color, what color or does brown/gray go with your eyes?
I’m good with the uniform.

What type of service would you drive if given the choice and/or favorite service to drive?
I really like driving Route 17 it offers a diverse driving experience – suburban, urban, highway, etc.

What are your favorite hobbies or activities?
Playing chess, watching movies and volunteering
