General Information

The Southwest Corridor light rail line is a double-track system running from the existing I-25 and Broadway Station to Mineral and South Santa Fe. It will necessitate the relocation of existing railroad lines, and includes construction of 5 stations and 4 park-n-Rides.

The overall Southwest Corridor LRT project was 85% complete through the end of January 1999. Opening day is currently scheduled for July 14, 2000.

The Southwest Corridor LRT civil construction is split up into four sections which are referred to as "line segments." Following the completion of construction for the four line segments and relocation of the railroads, the RTD contractor starts layin g light rail tracks. Light rail track installation will be followed by construction of the electrified overhead contact system and train signals.

Line Segment 1 consists of civil construction including, but not limited to, construction of three bridges and three culverts: the Belleview Avenue railroad bridges, the Mineral Avenue railroad bridge, the Rangeview Gulch culvert, the Lee Gulch railroad crossing culvert, and the Slaughterhouse Gulch culvert. It also includes the railroad trackbed grading between Belleview and Mineral avenues. Other civil elements to be completed under this contract include construction of retaining walls at the Littleton Station and Phillips 66 locations, as well as construction of the LRT station platform flatwo rk, retaining walls and drainage components in the Littleton Railroad Depression.

Line Segment 2 consists of civil construction including, but not limited to, construction of two bridges and a culvert: the Big Dry Creek light rail bridge, the Tufts flyover structure, and the Lee Gulch light rail culvert, at the completion of which the recreational trail and water course will be restored. It also includes the railroad trackbed grading between Oxford and Belleview avenues and the light rail trackbed grading between Oxford and Mineral avenues. Other civil elements to be completed under this contract include drainage, utilities, the LRT catenary pole foundations and ductbanks, and construction of LRT station platform flatwork, retaining walls and underground components for the Mineral Station.

Also included is the railroad trackbed grading between Alameda and Asbury avenues a nd the light rail trackbed grading between Broadway and Oxford Avenue. Other civil elements to be completed under this contract include demolition of the existing northbound and southbound bridges over Iowa Avenue and demolition of the Machine Mart buildi ng. The civil contractor will also perform drainage, utilities, the LRT catenary pole foundations and ductbanks, and construction of LRT station platform flatwork, retaining walls and underground components for the Oxford, Hampden and Evans stations.

The Contractor to design, furnish and install a fully functional automatic block wayside signal system along the entire light rail alignment from South Broadway to Mineral Avenue. This work shall also in clude modification of the existing interlock at South Broadway to accomodate the light rail extension and construction of a new interlock at Mineral Avenue. This work includes but is not necessarily limited to hardware, assembly and equipment procurement and design, and its subsequent field fabrication, material, appurtenances and incidentals necessary to complete the signal system.

The Operations Facility Yard Expansion consists of civil construction including, but not limited to, construction at Navajo Street and at the Mariposa yard. The work for Navajo Street includes demolition and replacement of pavement and curb and gutter, installation of fencing and an electric gate, storm drainage improvements, construction of a sanitary sewer line, and abandonment of an existing sanitary sewer line. The work for Mariposa yard includes dem olition of concrete track apron, subgrade preperation for 4 storage tracks, construction of retaining walls and ballast curb, and installation of catenary pole foundations, ductbanks, conduits, handholes, lighting foundations and fixtures.
