Kick up your heels at the West Rail Line grand opening
The West Rail Line arrives Friday, April 26 and you’re invited to the celebration! Join us for the grand opening ceremony at the Jefferson County Government Center/Golden Station at 10:30 a.m. The event will include an inaugural train bursting through the grand opening banner, a special ribbon cutting, a dedication, color guard, music and refreshments. Enjoy free rides on the W Line all day after the ceremony.
And that’s not all! On Saturday, April 27, the fun continues with 12 community-hosted station parties along the W Line from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visit one or visit all, for activities the whole family can enjoy, including food, live music, entertainment, giveaways and much more. Best of all, we’re providing free rides on the entire light rail system, so come and explore what’s new out west!
All of our events are made possible by the generous donations of our sponsors, partner cities, and municipalities and we thank them for making it all possible.
West Rail Line brings service changes
At RTD, we’re committed to building and operating the most efficient transit system for the communities we serve. And, with the completion of the West Rail Line, we’re offering commuters new transit options with 12.1 miles of light rail connecting downtown Denver, Lakewood and Golden, 11 new stations, 6 Park‑n‑Rides, and 3 new Call‑n‑Rides.
As we strive to create the best-transit experience, we’ve made significant changes in bus and light rail service that are scheduled to begin on April 28, 2013. For details on the upcoming service changes, please see the Final West Rail Line and April Service Changes brochure available at stations, on buses and trains, or online.
Make connections with new Call‑n‑Rides
Starting on April 29, RTD will provide service on three new Call‑n‑Rides in Belmar, Golden, and Green Mountain. This personalized curb-to-curb bus service is designed to take you anywhere you want to go within select RTD service areas for just $2.25 each way. One call can connect you to bus routes, Park‑n‑Rides, light rail stations along the new W Line, or to work, school and appointments.
Plan your trip, learn more about service options, hours, and service areas with Call‑n‑Ride bus service and see how easy it is to get on board on your schedule.
West Rail Line receives national award
RTD’s West Rail Line was recently selected as a Merit Winner of the 2013 Alliant Build America Award in the highway and transportation category. The award, which is presented by the Association of General Contractors (AGC), recognizes the nation’s most significant construction projects. A panel of judges representing all areas of construction evaluated the project’s complexity, innovative technique, and client satisfaction, among other criteria. AGC noted the West Rail Line project was completed eight months ahead of schedule and on budget.
The award is considered by many to be the most prestigious recognition of construction accomplishments in the U. S. We’re proud to be recognized and thank our construction team, Denver Transit Construction Group, and the community for all your support.
Enjoy the ride as much as the game
Baseball season is right around the corner, and RTD’s RockiesRide is the easy, fun, and affordable way to get you to Coors Field. With direct bus service from many Park-n-Ride locations throughout the metro area, catch RockiesRide for Opening Day on Friday, April 5, all weekend home games, the annual fireworks games, and the Yankees series in May.
It’s simple to take RockiesRide. Just hop on the bus at one of our pick up locations, or take our convenient light rail service right into downtown. And, with the W Line coming on April 26, 2013, we’re giving you one more exciting way to the game.
Table Mesa pedestrian bridge opens April 28
RTD’s FasTracks program achieves yet another milestone with the opening of the Table Mesa pedestrian bridge and associated elevators, stairs and boarding plaza. The bridge, which opens to the public on April 28, was set in place last September and connects the Table Mesa Park-n-Ride with eastbound bus connections, saving three-to-five minutes of travel time for commuters heading to Denver from Boulder.
The bridge is an integral part of the US 36 Bus Rapid Transit project. A collaborative partnership between RTD and CDOT, the BRT project will provide 18 miles of bus rapid transit service between downtown Denver and Boulder along Highway 36. Watch for more updates on the US 36 Bus Rapid Transit project.
Go green on Earth Day
Earth Day is April 22, when we recognize the importance of caring for the planet. At RTD, we believe every effort should be made to use clean fuels, recycle, and always look for ways to reduce our impact on the environment through our sustainability programs. We’ve pursued and implemented new technologies to reduce emissions, conserve resources, and improve the air quality in the communities we serve.
Go green on Earth Day by adopting a few activities that can make a difference. Continue your commitment to public transportation, reduce energy consumption by turning off lights when not in use, reuse bags, water bottles and dishware instead of disposables, and recycle paper, electronic devices, glass, and plastic. Together, we can make this a better planet for everyone.
Tip of the month
At RTD, your safety is our number one priority. We know accidents can happen when we’re rushing, distracted, or not paying attention to our surroundings. And, as we provide more transit options with the opening of the West Rail Line, we want to remind you to stop, look, and listen when you’re around trains, tracks, and buses. Please join us as a partner in safety.
Operator of the month, Eric Holcomb
Each month, RTD encourages passengers to nominate a bus driver or light rail operator who goes above and beyond to make their experience memorable. This month’s winning nomination goes to Route 15 bus driver, Eric Holcomb. The 15 travels east and west from downtown Denver to 17th and Chambers. His nomination was submitted by Lisa Barr, who was impressed with Eric’s concerns for safety and his friendly approach. Read more about Eric
