The wait is over. On January 1, we’re introducing a whole new way to ride for CollegePass and EcoPass customers. The first phase of RTD’s smart card rollout brings benefits you’ll love, including unlimited rides on regular bus and light rail with just one tap every time you ride.
Through mid-January, we’ll have RTD smart card ambassadors at light rail stations during rush hours to demonstrate how to use your new card. You’ll know them by their big smiles, stylish blue jackets, and enthusiasm. Go ahead, ask a question. We’re happy to help.
And that’s not all. Later in 2013 we’ll convert all of our fares and passes to smart card technology with the introduction of the MyRide card for the general public. Look for more details.
Celebrate the 6th Avenue Bridge lighting
Come one come all to the ceremonial lighting of the 6th Avenue Bridge on January 23, 2013. This exciting event marks the end of construction and the start of testing for the West Rail Line, scheduled to open on April 26, 2013.
The 6th Avenue Bridge, located at 6th and Simms, was designed by David Evans and Associates. During the event, to be held at 6 p.m. at Lakewood Fordland, it will be illuminated by hundreds of LED lights that span all 44 cables across the bridge. Once lit, the lights will remain on through the grand opening, creating a brilliant landmark for miles around.

Make CERT your New Year’s resolution
Start your new year with a resolution that lasts all year long. Join RTD’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and make a positive contribution to your community.
As a CERT volunteer, you will receive training that will prepare you to evaluate and assist others on any public transportation vehicle, in your neighborhood, workplace or even at home until first responders arrive. By attending a free three-day training course, you will learn medical operations, fire suppression, first aid and much, much more.
To become a CERT volunteer, you must be a U.S. citizen, and at least 18 years of age. We are now enrolling for 2013 classes, so get involved today.
Stay healthy during flu season
Cold and flu season is upon us and to keep you and your family healthy this winter, we have a few helpful tips that may lower your risk of getting sick and keep infections at bay.
Germs can remain on most surfaces for up to three days, and to combat this, RTD increases its sanitizing procedures on buses, trains and at stations. When sharing public spaces, it is important to cover your cough or sneeze, wash your hands often or use a hand sanitizer, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and practice other good healthy habits such as getting enough rest, drinking plenty of fluids, eating nutritious foods, and managing your stress.
Reminder: Service changes take effect January 6
We want to remind you that this month’s service changes take effect on January 6, 2013. For details, please see the Final January 2013 Service Changes brochure at stations, on buses and trains, or online.

Tip of the month
Do you have expired 2012 10-Ride tickets? Before you throw them away, check out RTD’s exchange policy. You can receive credit for your expired 2012 10-Ride tickets and apply it toward the purchase of a 2013 10-Ride ticket book, SkyRide round-trip ticket book, monthly pass, or Day Pass at any RTD sales outlet.
Operator of the month, Kelly Knafla
Each month, RTD encourages passengers to nominate a bus driver or light rail operator who goes above and beyond to make their experience memorable. This month’s winning nomination goes to Interlocken Call‑n‑Ride bus driver, Kelly Knafla. This Call‑n‑Ride serves Flatiron Crossing and areas of Interlocken and Westmoor Technology Park. His nomination was submitted by Michael Mascarenas, who was impressed with Kelly’s caring and friendly attitude. Read more about Kelly.
