RTD welcomes new board member
RTD is pleased to welcome new Board member Chuck Sisk, who was sworn in as the new Director representing District O, which includes Boulder, Louisville, Superior, Lyons, Hygiene, Niwot, Gunbarrel and parts of Longmont. Director Sisk was appointed by the Boulder County Board of Commissioners after the resignation of John Tayer, and will serve until the next regular RTD election in November 2014.
Director Sisk has served on a regional coalition of mayors and county commissioners promoting multi-modal transportation improvements along the U.S. 36 corridor. Currently, he is a member of 36 Commuting Solutions, an advocacy group dedicated to reducing traffic congestion and providing clean transportation options, and a partner in the Boulder-based law firm, Hurth, Sisk & Blakemore LLP.
Ride West. The adventure begins April 26.
Your life’s about to change, much sooner than you think. The West Rail Line, the first completed line of RTD’s FasTracks program, connecting Denver, Lakewood, and Golden, is almost here. Starting April 26, 2013, you can enjoy faster, easier access to all the things you want to do. With 12.1 miles of rail, 11 new stations, 6 Park‑n‑Rides, and 3 new Call‑n‑Rides, we will transform the way you live, work, and make connections.
And that’s not all. We’re inviting you to be part of the celebration. Join us on an adventure on opening weekend with free rides, and stay awhile at our station parties and enjoy refreshments, entertainment, giveaways, and much more. Watch for more information as the countdown continues.
U.S. DOT and APTA extend special invitation to RTD Director
RTD District C Director, Angie Malpiede, has been invited by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the American Public Transportation Association to participate in a series of conversations concerning transportation initiatives in the Hispanic community.
As part of the Transportation and the Hispanic Community, Challenges and Opportunities forum, she will join 13 other Hispanic leaders from around the country to discuss challenges, opportunities, and the need to elevate the importance of transportation in the Hispanic community. The discussions will focus on strategies for engaging Hispanic leaders, and Hispanic involvement in local transportation planning and development. The results of the forum will likely influence national transportation policy as it relates to the Hispanic community.
Connections on the horizon with I-225 Rail Line
RTD is proud to announce our latest FasTracks milestone. On March 1, we will celebrate the beginning of construction on the I-225 light rail extension with a groundbreaking event at the future Centrepoint and Sable Station. The ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. at 14575 Centrepoint Drive across the street from the Town Center of Aurora.
The event will commemorate the public–private support RTD received to extend light rail from the planned Iliff Station to the Peoria/Smith Station. Construction is already underway on the segment from Nine Mile Station to Iliff Avenue, through a partnership with the Colorado Department of Transportation as part of the I-225 highway widening project. When the 10.5-mile light rail line is completed in 2016, it will offer eight new stations with key connections to major employment and recreational centers, and the East Rail Line to DIA.
Big opportunities for small businesses
RTD is always looking for partner companies to help us better serve our communities. And, with help and guidance from our Small Business Office, hundreds of businesses are growing and thriving throughout the region. We focus on promoting economic development and growth by increasing jobs and business opportunities for small and disadvantaged businesses. Through our Disadvantaged Business Enterprise/Small Business Enterprise (DBE/SBE) program, we provide businesses with the tools, training, and resources to competitively bid on RTD contracts.
Are you a small or minority-owned business? We invite you to take advantage of our DBE/SBE program. We provide free certification, technical assistance, networking opportunities, and more. Visit our Business Center and learn all you need to know about doing business with RTD or call 303.299.2111.
Be car-free with RTD and Denver B-cycle
Denver B‑cycle will launch its 2013 season on Sunday, March 17. With RTD and Denver B‑cycle, you can get where you’re going without ever getting into a car. By using bus or light rail to commute longer distances, and a B-cycle bike to finish the last mile of your trip, you can reduce your reliance on single occupancy vehicles.
B-cycle kiosks can be found at many locations throughout the metro area, and with an affordable membership you can be car-free all summer long. Check out Denver B‑cycle for membership information and to find a station near you.
Tip of the month
This year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade starts at 10:00 on Saturday, March 16, filling the streets of LoDo with Irish good cheer. This annual event offers fun for everyone with clowns, floats, marching bands, and much more.
As a result, some downtown Denver city streets will be closed with delays in service on routes 0, 1, 6, 8, 20, 28, 32, 38, 44, 48, 52, 102X, AF, B, and L. If you plan on attending the festivities, check out how our bus and light rail can get you there.
Operator of the month, Charlotte Garcia
Each month, RTD encourages passengers to nominate a bus driver or light rail operator who goes above and beyond to make their experience memorable. This month’s winning nomination goes to SeniorRide bus driver, Charlotte Garcia. SeniorRide provides transportation for senior citizens, from shopping excursions to a variety of cultural, educational, and entertainment events. Her nomination was submitted by James Herringer, who was impressed with Charlotte’s patient and friendly attitude. Read more about Charlotte
