Highway Improvements

RTD and CDOT have worked long and hard at improving the road conditions along US 36. You may have noticed your commute has gotten easier with the completion of the majority of the construction between Denver and Boulder. These construction improvements will benefit RTD riders and were partially funded by RTD FasTracks as a part of the bus rapid transit project.

Highway improvements include:

  • Express Lanes for a faster trip :
The Flatiron Flyer travels on 18 miles of express lanes between Denver and Boulder. The new express lanes are the result of collaboration between CDOT and RTD. These managed lanes will help the Flatiron Flyer avoid traffic delays and travel more quickly – resulting in better on time performance and reliability. What are the Express Lanes?

The Express Lanes brings 18 miles of toll and HOV lanes between Boulder and Denver built for the following types of travel:

    • Bus : All RTD buses travels in the Express Lanes when appropriate for the route
    • Carpooling : HOV2+ (High Occupancy Vehicles with 2 or more passengers) will be able to drive in these lanes for free
    • Toll : SOV (Single Occupant Vehicles) can travel in the Express Lanes and pay a toll. Toll information can be found at ExpressToll.com.
  • Expanded highway shoulders :
The shoulder of the highway was expanded to 12 feet wide and built to withstand the weight and width of a bus. These safe and wide shoulders give RTD buses an alternative lane to use when there are traffic delays. This feature will be available in the future, pending the revision of the current highway statutes. What are the rules for driving on the shoulder?
    • Only buses are allowed to use the shoulder. Private vehicles must remain in the general purpose lanes.
    • Buses are permitted to drive in the shoulder when traffic slows to 35 m.p.h. or below.
    • Buses can travel up to 35 m.p.h. in the shoulder
    • Buses can only travel 15 m.p.h. faster than the speed of traffic in the general purpose lanes, up to 35 m.p.h.
    • The highway shoulders will still be used by broken down vehicles and emergency responders. RTD drivers will be aware of emergency situations and will use the shoulder accordingly.
    • Bus on shoulder operation will begin in the near future. Stay tuned for more details.
  • Bus-only ramps :
Beginning in 2010, bus-only ramps were constructed at McCaslin and Broomfield. These ramps help buses avoid long traffic delays at exit- and on-ramps. With bus-only ramps, RTD can get you on and off the highway more quickly.
  • Smart highway design :
US36 now has overhead signs that can display real-time highway conditions, allowing for buses and cars to move into an alternative lane to avoid traffic delays.
Updated station with new red canopy and seating

Upgraded, updated, stylish stations

Brand new station canopies have been installed at the six Park-n-Rides along US36. These stations include new red canopies, seating, ticket vending machines and digital information displays. These facilities will provide protection from the elements as well as technological conveniences.

Passengers will be able to purchase a ticket before boarding the bus, which can speed up boarding times. The digital information displays will also show scheduled bus departure information. RTD is working to implement real time information on these signs in the near future.

Bike connectivity

Alternative forms of transportation are a key part of creating a sustainable transportation network, which is why on-board bike storage, bike parking, and bike paths are key features of the Flatiron Flyer and US36 improvement project.

US36 Bikeway

An 18 mile bike highway is being constructed between US36 & Table Mesa Station and 80th Avenue in Westminster. The bikeway is paved, 12 feet wide, and features protective barriers along the highway.

Bike Parking and Storage

There are over 270 bike parking spaces on RTD property along the Flatiron Flyer route, including bike racks and reservable bike lockers. The Flatiron Flyer bus can also carry up to eight bikes if you need to complete your commute on two wheels.

Secure Bicycle Parking

Bus-Then-Bike Shelters currently provide long-term, secure, and weather-protected bicycle storage at two future Flatiron Flyer stations: US36 & Table Mesa Station and Downtown Boulder Station. Commuters can combine a bus trip and bike ride by keeping a bike in the shelter overnight or during the day and biking the first or final mile to or from a Flatiron Flyer Station.

Additional shelters are in the works at US36 & McCaslin Station and Boulder Junction at Depot Square Station, and planned for the US36 & Sheridan and US36 & Broomfield Stations. For an access card, sign up at www.BusThenBike.com

Service Changes

Note: These service changes went into effect on January 3, 2016.

Stop Adjustments

The current number of local on-street stops used by the Flatiron Flyer will be reduced. The stops being eliminated are often low-used, provide duplicate coverage to other near-by stops and are time-consuming. The Flatiron Flyer will focus on speed and longer distance travel by serving high ridership stops in key locations. Robust local bus service is designed to cover all bus stops and serve the shorter distance travel needs. The local bus service that currently exists will provide ample coverage to these stops and connect riders to the key locations served by Flatiron Flyer.
