MyRide Smart Card

What is MyRide?

MyRide is the next step in RTD’s smart card evolution and provides a convenient and cost efficient way to load money and pay your fare. You simply tap the card to the validator while boarding a bus or prior to boarding rail to validate your trip.

The benefits of using MyRide stored value include:

  • Choices: The smart card is free and you can choose the amount of money to put on it at any time.
  • Savings: You’ll save $0.25, ($0.15 for discount riders) compared to cash fare every time you use your MyRide card.
  • Peace of mind: You no longer have to worry about carrying exact change for your trip.
  • Time: Paperless transfers are now included in your fare, with a three hour transfer window after your first tap.
  • Security: RTD offers balance protection for your MyRide card.

How it works

Stored value allows you to load money onto your MyRide card to pay your bus and rail fares. It deducts the correct fare whenever you hold your card on the validator.

There are two types of MyRide cards: Full fare and Discount fare. You must provide proof of eligibility to use a Discount fare smart card.

Your MyRide card is valid for rides on all regular bus, rail, and Call-n-Ride services. MyRide is not available on Access-a-Ride and special service routes including but not limited to BroncosRide, BuffRide, RockiesRide, RunRide, and SeniorRide.

How to use MyRide

To use your MyRide card, place your card flat against the validator while boarding a bus or prior to boarding rail, and hold it there until you hear a beep and see a green or yellow light indicating that your card has been validated. If you get a red light on first tap, try tapping again.

Step 1

Tap your card on a smart card reader, every time you ride, even when transferring.

Bus — Board the bus and tap your card on the validator next to the driver. By default, your ride is logged at the highest service level available (Local, Regional, Airport). Tell the driver if you wish a lower service level.

Rail — Locate the validator near the rail platform, press Local, Regional, or Airport service and tap your card on the reader.

Step 2

Listen for a tone and watch for a light.

Green Light — Card is valid and your fare has been paid.

Yellow light — Card is valid. Please show a valid ID and/or proof of eligibility to the bus driver or fare inspector if requested.

Red light — Card is not valid or may have insufficient funds for trip. Use other form of fare payment.

General MyRide Questions

The MyRide card is a reusable plastic card the size of a credit card that contains a chip for passengers to load and store cash value to electronically pay fares on bus and rail. Just tap the card on the smart card validator while boarding a bus or prior to boarding rail to pay your fare.
Stored cash value is a pay-per-use feature that allows you to load money onto your MyRide card and pay for your ride each time you board bus and rail. You can load any amount up to a maximum card balance of $200. The available cash value stored on your MyRide card is decreased to pay your fare when you tap your card at a validator.
Stored cash value is the only feature available at this time; however additional features will be available at a later date as future enhancements to MyRide.
The plastic, credit card-sized MyRide card uses radio frequency and smart card technology. The validator communicates with the card to read and update the information it contains. No personal data is stored on the MyRide card itself. This technology is used in transit systems around the world.
MyRide offers a $0.25 discount off of the regular cash fare and a $0.15 discount on the discount cash fare. Proof of eligibility is required to ride with a Discount MyRide Card.

Your MyRide smart card is valid for rides on all regular bus, SkyRide, and rail services. The MyRide card does not work on Access-a-Ride, Call-n-Ride, and RTD Special Service routes, including but not limited to, BroncosRide, BuffRide, RockiesRide, RunRide, and SeniorRide. Fares for these services are not programmed into the smart card system; therefore another form of fare payment is required to ride these services.

  • Seniors, age 65+: photo ID showing passenger's age, Medicare card or RTD-issued Special Discount Card

Using your MyRide card

You can begin using your MyRide card as soon as you load money onto it. In order to receive your card for this pilot, you will need to load a minimum initial payment $10.00 onto your card.
You do not need to tap your card when exiting a bus or train. Tapping is only required upon boarding. Exceptions may apply on certain Regional routes.
Smart card validators are conveniently located at all rail stations. Many stations have more than one validator. Most often, validators are located in high traffic pedestrian areas at the station or next to the rail platform where the train arrives.
Signage is located at all rail stations behind each card validator to help you determine which level of service you should select for your trip.
Transfers are encoded on your card. You must tap the card on a validator when transferring; however no additional fare will be deducted when transferring to the same service level on buses or trains for three hours from the first time you tapped your card. Transfers do not include the reverse direction on the same route. The validator will display the time the transfer expires.
During the 3-hour transfer window, if you transfer to a higher level of service, the difference between the higher fare and the lower fare will be deducted from your card. Example: You board a local bus and $2.35 is deducted from your card. You transfer to a Regional bus with a fare of $4.25. The difference of $1.90 will be deducted from your card.
Yes. If using a discount MyRide card, you must show proof of eligibility each time you tap your card on the validator on bus or upon request by a rail fare inspector.
Prior to tapping your card, the full fare MyRide amount is displayed on the smart card validator. This is the amount that will be deducted from a full fare card upon tapping, unless you are transferring or upgrading to a higher level of service. The discount fare is not displayed. The balance displayed while tapping reflects the balance after the fare was deducted.

By default, the validator is set to the highest service level (Local, Regional, or Airport) provided by the route. Tell the driver if you need a lower service level prior to tapping and the driver will downgrade the fare.
  • To upgrade to the correct fare level: select the correct service level (Regional or Airport) and tap your card to the validator again.
  • You will not be able to downgrade your fare after you have paid. Call RTD Customer Care for assistance.
