National Night Out celebration generates good discussion

Members of RTD’s Transit Police Department took part Tuesday, Aug. 3, in a National Night Out celebration in Denver’s LoDo neighborhood, with more than 100 people coming out to meet their neighbors, speak with law enforcement and get to know their elected officials. RTD Deputy Police Chief Steve Martingano noted strong representation from homeowners associations and property management teams in the downtown area at the event, which took place at 15th and Wewatta streets.

“It was great to see people come out and support the police officers,” he said. “They asked a lot of great questions about RTD.” Also participating in the event were RTD Officers Justin Smith and Corey Averill, the latter a K-9 handler accompanied by bomb-detection dog Max; RTD Cpl. Cassandra Blanchard; Lt. Benjamin Little of Allied Universal; and mental health clinician Danielle Jones, a member of RTD’s co-responder program with the Mental Health Center of Denver.

Such events enable the agency to strengthen its partnerships with community groups and discuss ways all can work together, Martingano said.
