RTD expects to receive $203.4 million from new COVID-19 relief package
The Regional Transportation District (RTD) has received word that the agency can expect to receive $203,367,528 through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 (CRRSAA), signed by President Donald J. Trump on Dec. 27, 2020.
The federal funding was announced this morning by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA), as part of $14 billion to be allocated in support of U.S. public transit systems to help offset impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. RTD is the urbanized area dedicated recipient of the funding, which encompasses approximately $190.9 million apportioned for the Denver-Aurora area and $12.5 million for the Boulder area.
“Today’s announcement brings clarity regarding the amount of funding our agency will receive, and I extend my appreciation to our partners at the FTA, our congressional delegation and all of our federal stakeholders for this critical funding,” said General Manager and CEO Debra A. Johnson." The leadership team and I will continue assessing in an expeditious manner how this funding will best support our transit service delivery. RTD and our transit peers nationwide provide a crucial lifeline for many people during this pandemic. Our essential employees have continued to deliver service to those who need it most, and we are committed to doing so as we look ahead,” Johnson added.
As was the case with the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act signed into law in March 2020, this supplemental funding requires no local match and can be used for expenditures from Jan. 1, 2021, forward. The funds are to be used as soon as possible and are expended on a reimbursement basis. They can be used for any operations costs associated with COVID-19, including staffing. RTD has reduced its workforce by about 300 people due to the economic challenges brought on by the pandemic.
RTD received $232,253,946 through the CARES Act, as part of $25 billion in funding announced by the FTA in April 2020.
