RTD leaders participate in Moving People Forward conference

RTD staff participated in Bicycle Colorado’s annual Moving People Forward Conference on Monday, Feb. 6, 2023. Held in Downtown Denver, the theme for this year’s inclusive conference was “critical measures.” The keynote presentation was delivered by Charles T. Brown, a transportation researcher, policy expert and CEO of Equitable Cities, a transportation and planning research firm. Brown, an adjunct professor at Rutgers University, focused his speech on the intersectionality of equity and environmental justice in transportation planning. In particular, Brown emphasized the importance of accessibility, affordability and health impacts in transportation decision-making at all levels of government. He also encouraged thoughtful community involvement from community members impacted by decisions, especially those who are not normally included in discussions or asked for feedback.

Nearly 300 people participated. Attendees including local elected officials, including RTD Board Chair Guissinger. Staff from city and county transportation and public works departments, non-profit organizations, and transit advocates also attended.

Members from RTD’s Planning and Communications departments and Civil Rights Division attended the conference while two members of the agency’s leadership team shared their knowledge on breakout panels. Carl Green, Civil Rights Director, was a panelist on the topic of “measuring equity.” Brian Welch, Acting Assistant General Manager of Planning, presented on the “measuring transit” panel.
