¡Viva! Streets and ¡Viva! RTD: Spreading the word about Zero Fare

¡Viva! Streets Denver is a community-focused street festival that was held on four Sundays in May through August. Approximately 3.5 miles of Broadway in Denver were closed to vehicular traffic, allowing bikers and walkers to use the roads safely. The RTD Community Engagement Team attended the final installment of this year’s event on Sunday, Aug. 6.

¡Viva! Streets Denver is inspired by La Ciclovía, an event that occurs each Sunday between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Bogotá, Colombia. The city shuts down over 75 miles of streets and highways to create a massive car-free area, raising awareness to a healthier and more active lifestyle that involves less driving and more walking, jogging and/or biking. There are more than 400 cities in nearly 30 countries that have put on their own versions of the event.

Positioned at the heart of the Civic Center hub, RTD team members provided a wide variety of games, snacks and valuable information to festivalgoers. Attendees eagerly took part in games such as Connect 4 and ring toss. They were also able to tour RTD’s iconic parade bus. Team member Brandon Figliolino demonstrated how easy it is to load a bicycle on the front rack of any RTD bus.

The main topic of interest was Zero Fare for Better Air, which lasts through the end of the month. The initiative went into effect July 1 and provides customers no-cost access to all of RTD’s bus, rail, on-demand or paratransit services.

The festival had an atmosphere of enthusiasm and excitement as community members shared their personal experiences using the Zero Fare program, highlighting how it has made their lives better through connections.

Zero Fare for Better Air ends on Aug. 31, so be sure to take advantage of all the exciting events happening this month. For a list of things to do in Denver and how to use transit to get there, check out Rad Things (to) Do.
