Each month, we highlight a bus or train operator for their exceptional customer service. This month, we would like to feature bus driver Emily Abbott.
"Emily was the nicest and most helpful driver I have ever had the pleasure of riding with on RTD. She was super helpful to so many riders, answering questions about fares, transfers, connections, etc. all with a smile on her face that seemed to put people at ease. Emily was super knowledgeable about the routes and was able to help passengers in a calm, happy manner. Her commitment downright wowed me and going above and beyond the job requirements. If I had a choice, I wish I could be her passenger every time I took the FF1 route. What an amazing driver and person that I had the joy of encountering."
"I've ridden a bus under her helm multiple times. She is quick to help cyclists or tote draggers. Have others model her behavior, please."
"As I was getting on this bus, my phone died, and she let me use her charger so I could turn it on and show her my ticket. There was another passenger who asked if he would be able to make a connection, and she was able to give him an answer and even told him which stop to go to when he got off."
After receiving the commendation, we wanted to know more about Emily, and she agreed to answer a few of our questions.
Emily Abbott Wrote:
How long have you driven for RTD and have you always been a bus driver?
I started with RTD on February 28, 2016, as a first-time bus operator and remain in that position today.
What were you in a previous life?
I don't believe in previous lives, but if I did, I would have been a 1930s diva.
What do you like best about your job?
I like helping those who are new in town, visiting or just moved to the area, and being a dependable operator for my regular commuting passengers.
If you could listen to music while working, what type?
I can't pick just one type of music. Spotify doesn't even give me recommendations anymore, because my music tastes are all over the place.
If you could deck out your bus, what style?
I would decorate the outside of my bus in a Japanese dekotora style, and the interior would be decked out in plush Rolls Royce leather.
If you could change your uniform color, what color?
I'd select every color of the rainbow, making our polos pop.
What type of service would you drive if given the choice and/or favorite service to drive or operate?
I'm lucky to drive my favorite service, the Flatiron Flyer (FF) routes. I've been called the queen of the FFs and would have to agree. If I were to choose my favorite FF routes, I'd select the weekday FF2 because of the mix of commuters, and the early FF1 on the weekend when I get to meet families and new passengers. Though I won't go back to the late-night FF1s, I will miss the occasional final return trip to Boulder, which could turn into a party filled with laughs and good times.
