Ride with your bike on light rail

A Winning Combination: Bikes and Transit
Whether you're an avid bicycle commuter or a recreational cyclist, it's easy to include RTD in your riding plan. RTD's bike-n-Ride program combines bikes with transit to help you commute to work or school. It's a healthy, economical and environmentally friendly way to commute or expand your horizons during recreational outings.

Roll along with Bikes on Buses
All buses except the 16th Street FREE MallRide are equipped with bike racks on the front of each bus. These easy-to-use bike racks can hold two bikes and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. On Regional and skyRide buses, you may either use the bike racks or you may load your bike inside the baggage bins. Bikes can be loaded at all bus stops except those marked "non-bicycle stop" in Boulder Canyon between Boulder and Nederland.

Only two-wheeled adult and children's bikes fit on bus bike racks (with the exception of recumbent and tandem bikes). Motorized bikes are not allowed on any bike rack, inside the baggage bins, or inside light rail trains.

Easy-To-Use Bus Bike Racks
  • Signal bus driver to let them know you are loading your bike
  • You must be able to lift the bike and place it on rack yourself
  • To release the rack squeeze the center handle and slowly lower it down
  • Place front wheel on side labeled "Front Wheel"
  • Pull up and out on support arm and hook arm securely over the top of front wheel closest to the fork
  • When boarding let driver know where you will be exiting the bus
  • Stay toward front of bus and watch your bike to ensure its safety
  • Exit at the front door and tell the driver you are removing your bike
  • If you are the last person to unload your bike, return rack to its upright position

RTD is not responsible for lost or stolen bikes or damage to bikes due to improper loading.

Bikes may be placed inside the bus under the following conditions:

  • It is dark and the next bus arriving is more than one hour away
  • It is before or after rush hours and there are very few passengers on the bus
  • The bus driver determines it is safe to allow a bike inside the bus.

Regional and skyRide Tips

  • Use front-mounted bus bike racks. If front-mounted bus bike racks are not available, please follow the steps below to use baggage bins.
  • When the bus arrives, remain in line with your bike to prevent losing your place in line. Luggage and bikes will be loaded before the passengers board the bus.
  • Always allow the driver to open and close the baggage bin doors.
  • Load your bike as compactly as possible into the baggage bin to accommodate additional bikes or baggage. You may need to quick release your front wheel.
  • Once you have loaded your bike, you may return to your place in line to board the bus.

Make Tracks with Bikes on Light Rail
Bikes are allowed on light rail any time, on a space-available basis, at designated doors only. As of April 2009, a bike on light rail permit is not required to bring a bicycle on light rail.

Loading your bike on light rail

  • Load your bike at the front or rear entrance of the light rail car (look for the symbol on the platform near the yellow safety strip).
  • Prior to boarding, allow other passengers to exit/board first.
  • Hold your bike against the rear or front of the light rail car. Stay with your bike and leave plenty of room for passengers to clear the doorway at all times.
  • Be ready to exit immediately at your destination.

Bikes are allowed on RTD Light Rail at all times, but are subject to the following courtesy rules:
  • Boarding can be denied or you may be asked to de-board at any time due to overcrowding of either bicycles and/or passengers.
  • Bicycles cannot be longer than 80 inches, higher than 48 inches or motorized. Fold-up bikes are permitted and subject to all other conditions.
  • Bicycles that are excessively muddy, dirty, or greasy are prohibited.
  • Bicycles may not inconvenience any light rail passenger boarding or de-boarding.

Bike Lockers
Bike lockers provide excellent, secure bicycle parking by improving protection from theft, vandalism, and inclement weather. The lockers are designed to hold one bicycle each as well as bicycle gear such as panniers, locks, lights, etc. Bike lockers are available on a 6-month lease for an assigned locker, with an option to renew the lease. Bike lockers are located at park-n-Rides, light rail stations and transit stations. See a list of bike locker/rack locations below. For information on bike locker availability, call 303.299.2288 (Note: this phone number doubles as the RTD Lost-n-Found line and does not accept voicemail).

To lease a bike locker for the first time, customers must go to Boulder Transit Center, Civic Center Station or Market Street Station to submit the Initial Bike Locker Lease Agreement and pay a $30 rental fee as well as a one-time $20 padlock fee. The padlock is the customer’s property.

To renew a bike locker lease (on a 6 month cycle), please submit a Bike Locker Renewal Lease Agreement (PDF) with a $30 lease renewal fee. The form can also be obtained at Boulder Transit Center, Civic Center Station or Market Street Station. Submit the form with the renewal fee in-person at the three stations mentioned above, or send directly to:

Please note: Each time the bike locker lease agreement expires (every 6 months), customers must update the information in the contract and re-sign the agreement. This must be done within 14 days of the expiration month or the customer will forfeit their rights to the locker. RTD will not contact the customer regarding any renewal reminders. It is the sole responsibility of the customer to renew the agreement in a timely manner with RTD. If RTD does not have a renewal agreement on file by the 15th of the month following the expiration month, RTD will remove the customer lock and any items found in the locker will be disposed of without further notice.
