In memoriam: Joseph Maestas and Stephanie Rivera
RTD mourns the recent passing of two Platte Division employees: Joseph Maestas and Stephanie Rivera.
Maestas was a longtime veteran of RTD with a career spanning 22 years. Joining the agency in 2001, Maestas was hired as a service worker in the Service and Cleaning Division. He eventually became a general repair certified mechanic.
Colleagues of Maestas remember him as a hard worker and as dedicated to his craft as they come. He loved playing basketball with his coworkers.
“I have known Joe since he joined RTD in 2001,” said Charlie Chavez, Maintenance Operating Division Manager. “Throughout his career, I have had the pleasure of working alongside him and can attest to his kindheartedness, positivity and friendliness towards everyone he met.”
During breaks, Maestas could be found socializing in the break room around the pool table or playing ping pong with his colleagues.
“Joe has made a positive impact on my life,” said Chavez. “I am sure he has done the same for many others.”
"Joe was different, in a good way," said Jon Paul Mitchell, Technical Training Instructor/Supervisor. "He wasn't just a colleague, but an extraordinary individual and a true friend."
Rivera joined RTD in 2021 as a bus operator and made an immediate impact on her colleagues and superiors.
“Stephanie’s impact extended beyond driving,” said Kalee Wallace, Transportation Operating Division Assistant Manager. “She formed genuine connections, brightening our days with her warm smile and caring nature.”
Rivera’s mantra of “faith over fear” inspired those around her to give it their all day-in and day-out.
