RTD helps empower youth voices at the National Youth Transportation Equity Convening

The Regional Transportation District’s (RTD) Transit Equity Office proudly partnered with the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) to host the 2024 National Youth Transportation Equity Convening (NYTECx2024) in Denver on Sept. 21, marking the first time this impactful event has taken place in the city. Bringing together over 300 youth leaders, policymakers, transportation experts and community advocates from across the United States, this event was a remarkable convergence of ideas focused on building equitable, sustainable and inclusive transportation systems.

RTD’s involvement in the early planning stages was driven by agency recognition of the importance of a platform where young voices could engage directly with transportation decision-makers. This opportunity aligns perfectly with the Zero Fare for Youth program, which seeks to empower young people by eliminating financial barriers, allowing them to navigate the transit system and become active users of RTD.

RTD’s Communications and Engagement Department played a crucial role in promoting NYTECx2024 and ensuring that local youth, particularly those interested in the Freedom to Move Campaign, were actively involved. This campaign seeks to empower marginalized youth in the United States to advocate for a safe, sustainable and equitable transportation system. Through these efforts, RTD created a unique platform for young community members to express their views on accessible transit, allowing them to witness the agency’s commitment to equitable transportation firsthand.

For the Transit Equity Office, attending NYTECx2024 offered practical insights into youth-driven ideas around transit safety and accessibility. Team members heard from young participants about innovative approaches to involving youth in transit decision-making. One standout idea was the concept of a Youth Transit Advisory Board — a structured, youth-led group that could provide RTD with feedback on issues affecting young riders, including accessibility, safety and usability. By collaborating with RTD’s Operations and Planning teams, this board could evaluate the impact of the Zero Fare for Youth program, bus stop design and route safety. It also could ensure that the transit system aligns with the needs of younger riders, fosters long-term engagement and reflects their unique perspectives.

The insights gained at NYTECx2024 have immediate relevance across RTD departments. From amplifying youth voices in transit planning to understanding how equitable transportation can enhance community connectivity, this convening provided invaluable lessons. RTD’s participation strengthens its commitment to equity, safety and responsiveness, benefiting not only the present RTD community but also future users of the transit system.
