Oct. 16 overnight closure of Niwot Road median at CO 119 to affect all modes of traffic
DENVER (Oct. 15, 2025) –– The Regional Transportation District (RTD) will not serve the Southbound CO 119 bus stop at Niwot Road from 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16 until 5:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17 while CO 119 Safety, Mobility & Bikeway Improvements Project crews perform necessary overnight traffic signal work.
The Niwot Road median, between northbound and southbound CO 119/Diagonal Highway, will be temporarily closed to all modes of transportation. The closure affects RTD bus Routes LD1/LD3 and BOLT. Customers are encouraged to use stops at 28th-119 or CO 119 & Village at the Peaks Mall.
Motorist Detour

- Eastbound Niwot Road travelers will turn right onto southbound CO 119/Diagonal Highway, turn left onto CO 52 and left onto 79th Street to return to Niwot Road.
About the Project
The CO 119 Safety, Mobility and Bikeway Project is constructing safety, mobility and bikeway improvements to make traveling through the corridor safer for all modes and transit travel faster and more reliable. The project is designed to integrate with other active multimodal projects on the corridorto ensure community members can safely and reliably travel throughout the corridor using their mode(s) of choice.
By the year 2040, the Diagonal Highway between Boulder and Longmont is expected to see a 25 percent increase in vehicular traffic. Increased traffic can result in more congestion, delay, tailpipe emissions and potentially more crashes.
Specific corridor improvements include:
- Addition of a commuter bikeway (Diagonal Bikeway) with several local connection points between northbound and southbound CO 119.
- New signage, striping and improved signal timing at all pedestrian crossings at signalized intersections.
- Signal timing adjustments at key intersections (Jay Road, 63rd Street, Colorado Highway 52, Niwot Road and Airport Road).
- Physically reconfiguring the CO 52 intersection to improve safety and to accommodate new Bus Rapid Transit stations and Diagonal Bikeway between the northbound and southbound travel lanes.
- Changing access at Airport Road and CO 119 to reduce crashes and to improve safety and traffic flow.
Construction is expected to be complete by Spring 2027. Kraemer North America is the General Contractor for this project.
