RTD announces Greg Smith as its Deputy COO, Bus Operations
Smith will continue his work to support the agency’s focus on the Strategic Priorities of Customer Excellence and Financial Success
RTD has promoted Greg Smith to Deputy Chief Operations Officer, Bus Operations from his previous role of Acting Assistant General Manager of Bus Operations. Throughout his tenure with the agency, Greg has served as a trusted, respected, and passionate leader, dedicated to public service. He has focused on shepherding RTD into an inspirational and sustainable OneRTD future.
Over a career in public transportation exceeding two decades, Greg has managed fixed route bus, paratransit, and demand response services. He has extensive experience in transit service delivery, maintenance, safety, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and financial management and oversight. Greg joined RTD in 2006 as a service planner and scheduler and progressively served in management positions within Special Services, Contracted Services, and Bus Operations.
Upon being promoted to Deputy Assistant General Manager of Bus Operations in 2020, Greg oversaw RTD’s contracted and agency-operated bus service delivery and compliance during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also led the renegotiation of complex service delivery contracts and service modifications that significantly improved the agency’s financial position.
As Acting Assistant General Manager of Bus Operations since March 2025, Greg provided steadfast leadership to ensure the continuity of Bus Operations, which encompasses approximately 1,800 personnel and an annual budget of $450 million.
Greg began his career in transit in 2004 as a service planner for the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) in San Diego, California. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from San Diego State University. Greg is an active participant with the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and a collaborator with global industry partners through the International Association of Public Transport.
