RTD’s W Line will be impacted by Xcel Energy’s planned power shutoff
Agency’s website, Service Alerts, and social media channels provide operational updates and service impacts
DENVER (Dec. 17, 2025) –– The Regional Transportation District (RTD) will adjust W Line rail services today when Xcel Energy initiates a planned Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in select parts of the Denver metro area.
The power shutoff will impact W Line service between Federal Center Station and JeffCo Gov’t Center•Golden Station. A bus shuttle will be deployed during the power shutoff between the impacted stations along the W Line. Additionally, lighting, ticket vending machines, and fare validators at the JeffCo Gov’t Center•Golden Station will not be operational during the shutoff. RTD’s service impacts are related to the location of the agency’s traction power substations, which supply electrical power to the rail system.
RTD is also preparing for the possibility that four commuter rail crossings along the A Line may be impacted by the forecasted strong winds. Several crossing arms along the A Line have a length of 32 feet or longer, meaning the crossing mechanisms may be affected by the forecasted winds and not able to safely operate. If high winds are sustained, RTD will reduce the A Line’s frequency to 30 minutes and supplement service with a bus shuttle.
RTD will continue to monitor operating conditions and weather reports. If warranted, additional service adjustments will be made to support the safety of customers and employees. Customers should plan ahead and sign up for Service Alerts or visit RTD’s website, Next Ride app, or social media accounts. Customer Care agents are also available to assist with trip planning by calling 303.299.6000.
Weather conditions are expected to start improving around 6 p.m.
On Monday, Dec. 15, Xcel Energy alerted RTD to prepare for a strong wind event and likely power shutoff. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning, which means wildfire risk is expected to increase, and strong winds heighten the risk of damage to Xcel Energy’s power lines.
