One day, millions of journeys: RTD joins first World Public Transport Day

Inaugural international day of celebration for the people, connections, and everyday moments that make transit matter

For many RTD customers in the Denver metro, public transportation is both essential and easy to overlook Today, April 17, offers a moment to pause and appreciate the simple day-to-day transitions, like commuting to work or school, from a fresh perspective.

RTD is joining transit agencies around the world to mark the first World Public Transit Day, a global initiative led by the International Association of Public Transport. The day highlights how transit does more than move people from point A to B but also shapes regions in subtle but transformative ways. It connects people to jobs, education, healthcare, and entertainment. It reduces congestion and emissions. And it gives customers the freedom to read, relax, or just take in the ride while someone else handles the road. World Public Transport Day recognizes all of it.

Across the Denver metro area, that story unfolds more than 65 million times a year on RTD’s system. From a daily commute to a weekend trip, every ride offers something new. Yet together, they connect more than 3 million people across 40 communities. Behind each trip are more than 3,000 RTD employees – including operators, mechanics, engineers, and cleaners who keep service running every day.

As part of the global celebration, RTD helped organize, coordinate, and produce a collaborative video project featuring transit systems from Atlanta to London. Agencies like DART, MARTA, SEPTA, Toronto Transit Commission, and Transport for London swapped routes for a moment of personality, showing the lighter side of the people who keep cities moving. It’s a reminder that behind every transit system are real people with a shared sense of pride that stretches beyond borders. Click here to watch.

RTD invites customers and community members to celebrate the big-picture impact of public transit and the everyday moments that happen on buses and trains.
