RTD operators train year-round to keep skills sharp and customers safe

Across the Denver metro area, customers rely on RTD bus, light rail and commuter rail services for safe, dependable travel—and that trust begins with extensive operator training. RTD's operator training program runs 12 weeks including hands-on learning in real world conditions.

Safety-focused from day one

For bus operators, the 12-week schedule pairs classroom instruction with on-the-road coaching to prepare them for Commercial Driving License certification. Light rail operators receive specialized training tailored to trains and system operations. Every training path is designed to ensure operators are ready to transport customers safely from the first day of the job.

Immersive learning with light rail simulators

Immersive simulation complements field practice for train operators. At RTD’s Elati facility, light rail operators train in a replica cab surrounded by a 180-degree projection, tackling complex, uncommon, or weather-related scenarios in a safe and controlled environment. All light rail operators spend time in the simulator as part of their curriculum.

Route familiarization through practice runs

Training for bus and rail operators includes an in-depth understanding of RTD protocols and procedures, vehicle operation, and the agency’s fare system and schedules. It also entails route familiarization through practice runs, driving routes and picking up customers, as well as night driving.

Training for customer service and de-escalation

To prepare for a variety of diverse conditions and circumstances, the comprehensive operator training program emphasizes not only safety, but customer service and deescalation techniques. Operators are ready to support every customer professionally and calmly when situations arise.

Training that never stops

Skill building continues well beyond graduating from RTD’s initial training. Operators participate in routine refresher training covering topics such as defensive driving and understanding diverse customer needs.

The agency’s investment in operator training culminates in professional operators who are dedicated to keeping the region moving safely and reliably.
