Light rail inspections
RTD keeps its light rail system in a continuous state of good repair by following rigorous American Public Transportation Association (APTA) standards. Inspections occur at multiple intervals—annually, quarterly, monthly, and twice weekly—to catch potential concerns before they can disrupt service or hinder safety.
Once a year, ultrasonic inspections are performed across all 120 miles of track to uncover internal rail flaws not visible during routine checks. Each quarter, rail staff perform detailed walking inspections to measure track conditions, identify anomalies, and monitor long-term patterns. Complementing this work, specialized hi-rail vehicles traverse the system twice weekly at slow speeds to ensure daily operational safety.
Bus inspections
RTD’s bus fleet undergoes daily maintenance to ensure every vehicle is ready for service the next morning. Operators complete a post trip Driver Vehicle Inspection Report that covers essential safety components such as tires, mirrors, brakes, and potential leaks. If any issues are identified, the bus is routed to a dedicated maintenance area for immediate repair, preventing potential service interruptions. In addition to these daily checks, federal guidelines require thorough annual inspections and documented followup, reinforcing long-term reliability.
