Safety starts before you board

Small choices can protect your whole trip – from sidewalk to station.

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, reminding everyone that staying aware and making simple and safe decisions protects lives, including your own. RTD is encouraging customers always to be alert when traveling around buses, trains, stations, and crossings.

Why staying alert matters

Shorter days and longer nights in the fallmean reduced visibility at bus stops, train platforms, and busy intersections. Colorado typically sees pedestrian incidents increase during this time, making awareness even more important for customers walking to and from RTD services.

Quick tips for a smooth ride:

When walking to stops and stations

  • Eyes up, phone down: Don’t become distracted by your phone and if listening to music on headphones or earbuds, lower the volume when approaching stops, stations, or tracks.
  • Be visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing after dark to help operators and drivers see you sooner.
  • Use designated paths: Stick to sidewalks, crosswalks, and marked pedestrian routes whenever available.

At bus stops

  • Stand back from the curb: Wait a safe distance until the bus fully stops. Avoid distractions and loud noises that may interfere with hearing safety announcements.
  • Make eye contact: Before crossing in front of a stopped bus, look to the operators and drivers to ensure you’re seen.

Around trains and rail crossings

  • Pause before crossing tracks: Look both ways because trains can approach from either direction at any time.
  • Never walk on the tracks: It's dangerous and illegal. Cross only at designated crossings for safety.
  • Mind the gap: Watch your step when boarding or exiting and stay clear of automatic doors.

While on platforms

  • Stay behind the safety line: Keep a safe distance from platform edges, especially when trains are approaching.
  • Look for safety updates: RTD provides audible and visual safety information — stay alert to updates about service or platform conditions

Your choices make a difference

Everyday decisions– like putting away your phone, waiting an extra moment at a crossing, or staying alert around shared spaces can prevent accidents and save a life. Stay aware and stay visible for a safe connection on RTD from start to finish.
