Work Underway to Reduce Train Horns Near BNSF Fuel Crossing
RTD is making modifications to the existing crossing system equipment at the BNSF Fuel Crossing that will allow trains to travel through the crossing without sounding their train horns. This work, taking place May 13–15, will remove the necessity of the temporary stop-and-proceed orders currently in place to mitigate train horn usage.
Construction activity is occurring daily from 7 a.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday. On Saturday, May 16, trains will operate on Track 1 on a portion of track north of Union Station while work continues. Cutover and testing of the upgraded system are scheduled to take place overnight from Sunday through Tuesday.
While the BNSF Fuel Crossing is not eligible to become a designated quiet zone – because it is a private entrance to the BNSF yard – the completed upgrades will significantly reduce noise by allowing train operators to pass through without sounding their horns.
