CO 119 BRT construction at Airport Road to temporarily affect two RTD bus stops
On Monday, April 13, work will begin at the Airport Road median at CO 119/Diagonal Highway to convert the median into a permanent, one-way northbound road. Southbound travel in the median will be permanently prohibited. For more information on the planned safety improvements, please visit the Colorado Department of Transportation project website.
Airport Road Full Median Closure
Work will begin with a single-day, full closure of the Airport Road median, between northbound and southbound CO 119/Diagonal Highway on Monday, April 13, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., as crews prepare the area for safety improvement work. The median will be closed to all modes of transportation.
During this closure, on April 13, both RTD bus stops at Airport Road and CO 119/Diagonal Highway (Stops #18005 and #19973) will be temporarily closed for pedestrian safety.
Detour Routes
- Eastbound travelers will turn right onto southbound CO 119, turn left onto 83rd Street, then turn left onto northbound CO 119.
- Westbound travelers will turn right onto northbound CO 119, turn left onto S Fordham Street, turn left onto southbound CO 119, then turn right to continue onto Airport Road.
Phase 1: New Traffic Pattern Begins April 13
Beginning Monday, April 13 at 3 p.m., the improvement will transition into its first major phase. The Airport Road median will be converted to one-way northbound traffic, and southbound travel through the median will be permanently eliminated to improve safety at the intersection. This phase is expected to last approximately two months.
What to expect:
- Drivers can use 83rd Street to access northbound CO 119/Diagonal Highway.
- Right turns from southbound Airport Road to southbound CO 119 will remain available from the southbound lane.
- Pedestrians and cyclists will use the east-side crosswalk, travel south through the median and connect to the existing trail.
These improvements are designed to enhance safety and mobility for all users, including drivers, transit riders, cyclists and pedestrians.
The Colorado Department of Transportation is implementing this change as part of the CO 119 Safety, Mobility and Bikeway Improvements Project to address significant safety concerns at the CO 119/Diagonal Highway intersection:
- Data shows that 85% of crashes involving southbound Airport Road and CO 119 result in injury, with most occurring when vehicles attempt to turn left onto northbound CO 119.
- Prohibiting left turns from southbound Airport Road onto northbound CO 119 (to Longmont) will eliminate sideswipe and rear-end crashes and the need for a signal and bus queue jump lane at that stop sign-controlled intersection and improve overall corridor safety and mobility.
About the Project
The CO 119 Safety, Mobility and Bikeway Project is constructing safety, mobility and bikeway improvements to make traveling through the corridor safer for all modes and transit travel faster and more reliable. The project is designed to integrate with other active multimodal projects on the corridor to ensure community members can safely and reliably travel throughout the corridor using their mode(s) of choice.
