Multiple improvements at RTD's I-25•Broadway Station are making access better, safer, and easier
Since June 2023, the Denver Office of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) Travel and Safety Improvements project at Broadway and I-25 hasbeen working to build safer and more accessible features at RTD’s second busiest light rail hub, I-25•Broadway Station.
One of this project’s most significant milestones occurred earlier this month when crews activated the traffic signals and pedestrian indicators at three intersections:
- Broadway and Ohio
- Ohio and Lincoln
- Lincoln and Walsh
Signals at the newly reconstructed RTD southern access point at Kentucky Ave. and Broadway will also contribute to the station’s connectivity upgrades.
The new signals and indicators improve pedestrian safety, support multimodal access and improve neighborhood connections to RTD’s I-25•Broadway Station. These improvements alsobolster the high-frequency bus service along the Broadway corridor that connects Englewood to downtown Denver.
The project features numerous other access and safety upgrades, including:
- Extended Bannock Road south of Exposition Avenue, providing access to the RTD Park-n-Ride from the north. This includes improved lighting, landscaping and a new multi-use pathway.
- Added an additional RTD parking lot with approximately100 new spaces beneath the I-25 overpass.
- New and upgraded light fixtures throughout the project area with additional security cameras under the I-25 overpass.
- Expanded multi-use paths throughout the area and a new, multi-use pathway under the I-25 overpass that provides pedestrians and cyclists direct access to RTD’s Broadway Station at Ohio and Broadway.
- Reconstructed sidewalk on Broadway, Lincoln and Ohio.
- Combined what used to be two separate intersections and traffic signals on Broadway at Kentucky and the southbound I-25 off-ramp, into just oneintersection, making travel safer along Broadway and in and out of RTD's I-25•Broadway Station.
- Extended Broadway’s bike lanes from Center to Exposition avenues andcreated a new multi-use connection to I-25•Broadway Station along Exposition and Bannock.
Accessing the station from Broadway, Ohio or Exposition is easier than ever. Plus, a new interpretive historic pathway near the north parking lot tells the interesting story of trolley line that ran in the area. The interpretive signs and benches allow opportunities for rest and reflection; and the new landscaping makes the journey in and out of the station more enjoyable.
As this critical project comes to a close, the improvements have made the station and the area around it safer; and Broadway is now more connected and accessible.
