RTD kicks off Earth Day with sustainable landscaping at Denver Union Station

Earth Day is an excellent reminder of the importance of sustainability and maintaining our quality of life. The official theme for Earth Day 2026 is “Our Power, Our Planet,” a campaign that features events such as cleanups, tree plantings, and climate education.

As RTD celebrates Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, the agency will undertake a six-week project to beautify the plaza adjacent to the light rail platform at Denver Union Station by installing new sustainable gardens.

The Landscape Improvements at Denver Union Station project is part of the agency’s commitment to improving the quality of service for RTD customers by continuously renewing, enhancing, and expanding our world-class transit system.

”Station renewal is just one of many ways in which we are Building a Better RTD and reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering an exceptional experience for every customer,” RTD Deputy CEO Angel Peña said.

The work includes replacing existing landscaping materials, planting trees, installing mulch, boulders and planters, and repairing irrigation systems.

The landscaping improvements will begin in the teardrop-shaped planters near the Chestnut Pavilion. The work site will be fenced off during construction, and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project. Flaggers will be on-site to guide customers while work vehicles transport landscaping materials. RTD reminds customers to be aware of workers and equipment while walking between the light rail platform and the bus concourse.

Work will take place 7 a.m.- 4 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning April 22 and continuing through the end of May.
