Safety tip: Darker evenings call for extra awareness

Heading home after work or catching an evening bus? The end of daylight saving time brings earlier sunsets, which means more trips happen in the dark. RTD is reminding customers that extra visibility and awareness can help them stay safe and make it easier for bus and train operators to spot waiting passengers.

RTD’s Safety and Environmental Compliance team shared these tips to keep in mind when traveling after dark:

  • Choose well-lit waiting areas. Wait near brightly lit bus stops, station platforms, or main entrances. Whenever possible, stay near other passengers rather than in isolated areas.
  • Make yourself easy to see. Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking or biking to a stop. Use a blinking light or other reflective gear to help operators and drivers spot you in low-light conditions.
  • Stay alert. Put away phones and other electronics while walking, and keep headphones at a volume that allows awareness of surrounding activity.
  • Plan ahead and avoid rushing. Check schedules before leaving and allow enough time to reach a stop safely. Download RTD’s NextRide mobile app to check real-time arrivals and plan trips.
  • Speak up about safety concerns. NextRide also allows customers discreetly report suspicious activity or safety concerns. Customers can also call RTD’s 24-hour security line at 303.299.2911 or text 303.434.9100.

A little preparation goes a long way, and customer awareness can make every trip safer. Before heading out, check the schedule, choose a well-lit route and stay aware of what’s happening while traveling.
