Cherry Street arch installation to mark halfway point for East Colfax BRT

Crews will install the Cherry Street Station arches on Monday, Jan. 26, marking a significant milestone for the East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit project. Planned arch installation will reach the halfway point with the 16th of 32 arches planned within Denver and Aurora. Construction on the Colfax BRT project is currently 40% complete.

In another visible sign of project progress, the first station canopy artwork, a piece by Lui Ferreyra procured as part of the 1% for Public Art program, was installed this week at the westbound Pennsylvania Station.

Celebrate the milestone

To commemorate the arch installation, RTD and the East Colfax BRT project team, as well as The Fax Partnership, are inviting neighbors to a Cherry Street Arch Viewing Party from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 7 Leguas Mexican Grille, 4550 E. Colfax Ave. The event gives the public a chance to watch the arch lift, speak with project staff, and spend time at a locally owned business along Colfax.

Refreshments will be available from 7 Leguas Mexican Grille and Stoner’s Pizza while supplies last. Attendees can also pick up a Fax Pass through the We Back The Fax initiative at the viewing party, which supports East Colfax businesses during construction. RSVPs are encouraged.

Station arches are one of the most recognizable features of the East Colfax BRT system. With 16 soon to be in place, the corridor is beginning to reflect the permanent infrastructure that will support more frequent service, level boarding, and improved station access.

Overnight Impacts

To limit impacts during the day, work at Cherry Street will take place overnight. Station arch deliveries and preparation took place Tuesday, Jan. 20, followed by planned arch installation on Monday, Jan. 26, between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

During overnight work, Colfax Avenue will be fully closed in both directions between Clermont and Dahlia streets. The north and south sides of Cherry Street at Colfax Avenue will also be closed at night. Noise levels will be monitored to stay within permitted limits, and business access will remain open. The public is asked to follow posted signage and flagger directions.

RTD will continue operating the 15 and 15L routes with temporary stops as needed. Customers are encouraged to sign up for Service Alerts for the latest information on detours and stop changes.

BRT Project Information

Construction on the East Colfax BRT project began in 2024 after more than a decade of community planning and input. The center-running BRT system will include new stations, improved pedestrian and bike connections, and more frequent service along the corridor. Full BRT service is expected to begin in 2028.

Community members can stay connected by visiting DenverGov.org/ColfaxBRT, following @WeBackTheFax on social media, or calling the night work hotline at 720.336.0025.
