Rain or shine, it’s easy to step up for safety

While winter weather has made a leap year over Colorado this season with a historical absence of snow and remarkably warm temperatures, RTD takes many measures to prevent ice and snowy conditions from contributing to slips and falls.

Some seasonal safety measures: RTD light rail vehicles are equipped with heated steps at every door to prevent snow and ice buildup for easier and safer boarding. The Facilities team also is at-the-ready to ensure crews are available in the wee morning hours to remove snow from station platforms to keep walkways as clear as possible at stations.

Foil slips and trips: Regardless of what the weather brings or how crowded a vehicle may be, some precautions while making your next connection safely via bus or trainto stay safe year-round include:

  • Watch your step when boarding or exiting vehicles, especially during rainy or snowy conditions
  • In tight spaces, hang onto a pole or handrail if you can and keep bags or backpacks close to avoid bumping others or losing your balance
  • Take a moment to let others exit before you board when stations or vehicles get crowded — it keeps things moving smoothly and safely for everyone
  • Use designated walkways and avoid shortcuts that could be uneven or slippery
  • Exercise patience and wait for vehicles to come to a complete stop before boarding
  • Prioritize footwear with traction over style alone, particularly during winter months
  • Give yourself an extra cushion of time during inclement weather to avoid rushing and risking falls
  • Be cautious on near the edge of rail platforms and stand behind the yellow line while waiting
  • Report any hazardous or icy conditions or maintenance concerns on RTD property by calling Customer Service at 303.299-6000 or visiting here.
  • Finally, a couple of reminders from last month’s safety message to prevent trips!
  • Use handrails whenever they are available on buses, trains, stairs, and ramps
  • Keep your phone or other devices tucked away when boarding to remain aware of your surroundings – that text or phone call can wait for safety

Fun fact extra:During winter conditions RTD “sweep trains” make regular runs overnight to prevent ice buildup on overhead wires so that service remains available for customers despite inclement weather. To learn all about RTD’s winter weather prep for its services, visit here.
