Giddy up: Transit Police officers celebrate Denver’s Western heritage with optional new look

RTD Transit Police officers debuted new cowboy hats last Friday while patrolling Denver Union Station and surrounding areas for the Rockies home opener. Chief of Police and Emergency Management Steve Martingano said the optional uniform addition was inspired by a desire to celebrate Denver’s historic Western culture.

Officer Michael Claiborne said wearing the cowboy hat felt special—something distinct from their day-to-day attire—while also providing helpful shade from the sun. He started the cooler morning wearing his beanie, but when he put on the cowboy hat, compliments from customers started rolling in.

“The hats were more popular than expected with the public,” Officer Brandon Saunders said. “About one in five people stopped to talk to the officers, saying how unique and good they looked with the uniforms.”

The department-approved cowboy hats are optional for officers during designated patrols. Officers purchased the hats individually, outside of RTD funding. Transit Police may wear the hats while patrolling special events such as Rockies home games, the National Western Stock Show, Broncos home games, National Night Out, country music concerts at Coors Field, Ball Arena, or Empower Field, the Parade of Lights, andNew Year’s Eve celebrations.
