RTD brings rail safety education to six stations during See Tracks? Think Train® Week
DENVER (Sept. 21, 2026) –– The Regional Transportation District (RTD) will bring rail safety education directly to customers across the Denver metro area during See Tracks? Think Train® Week, Sept. 21-25. Employees will be at several rail stations each day to engage with the public and educate on how best to stay safe around trains, tracks, and crossings.
Outreach comes as Colorado continues to experience deadly but preventable rail-related incidents. Since 2021, 822 rail-related accidents have been reported in Colorado, including 59 fatalities. Nationally, a person or vehicle is struck by a train approximately every three hours, underscoring the importance of staying aware and making safe choices around rail infrastructure.
Station outreach schedule
Throughout See Tracks? Think Trains Week®, RTD employees will share information with customers about rail safety and answer questions about safely navigating stations and areas around trains and tracks. Staff will be available from 7 to 9 a.m. at the following stations:
- Monday, Sept. 21: I-25-Broadway and Central Park stations
- Tuesday, Sept. 22: Peoria Station
- Wednesday, Sept. 23: Denver Airport Station
- Thursday, Sept. 24: Denver Union Station, at both the Commuter Rail and Light Rail areas
- Friday, Sept. 25: Thornton Crossroads-104th Station

Six ways to stay safe around trains
RTD and Operation Lifesaver encourage customers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists to:
- See Tracks? Think Train. Situational awareness can save lives. Always watch for trains, signals, and traffic.
- Stay off the tracks. Never retrieve a dropped item by yourself. Contact transit personnel for help instead.
- Watch for high voltage. Rail infrastructure is dangerous even without trains present. Never walk on or between rails.
- Use designated crossings. Obey signals, signs, and pavement markings. Always look for trains.
- Look both ways. Check for oncoming trains in addition to other vehicles on adjacent tracks.
- Stand back. Stay behind platform markings because trains overhang the tracks.
Trusted leader in mobility and safety
RTD operates 10 rail lines, including four commuter rail and six light rail lines, spanning 114.19 miles of track. The agency’s commitment to safety extends year-round through its Partners in Safety program, which has brought employees, customers, and community members together since 2010 to promote safe behaviors around buses, trains, tracks, and crossings. See Tracks? Think Train® Week (formerly Rail Safety Week) is a collaborative effort between Operation Lifesaver Inc., State Operation Lifesaver Programs, and rail safety partners across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The 2026 observance marks the campaign’s 10th anniversary and focuses public attention on preventing railroad crossing and trespass incidents through rail safety education. RTD reminds customers that the most important part of every trip is getting there safely. Stay alert, follow signs and signals, and always expect a train.
