Biking with RTD on Winter Bike to Work Day

Arriving just ahead of Valentine's Day weekend, Winter Bike to Work Day is a great excuse to celebrate a perfect pairing that goes hand-in-hand for many RTD customers: biking and transit. That's why on Friday, Feb. 13, RTD will host a snack station from 7 to 9 a.m. at Base Camp, 1464 17th St. in downtown Denver, giving bike commuters a chance to warm-up and refuel during their morning trip.

Winter Bike to Work Day may look a lot like any other weekday for some customers. The journey often starts with a short ride to a stop or station, continues with a bus or train for the longer stretch, and finishes on two wheels again at the other end. RTD's system is built to support bike-and-ride trips year-round, including for traditional bikes and battery-powered e-bikes.

Bikes on trains

Light rail trains include designated bike zones that provide space for customers traveling with bikes or e-bikes when trains are not crowded.

On commuter rail, level boarding allows customers to roll bikes on and off, with vertical racks available to secure bikes during the ride.

For both light rail and commuter rail, it’s prohibited to block customers with disabilities from accessing necessary features such as ramps, lifts, and assigned seating areas. Click here to learn more about RTD’s Customer Code of Conduct.

Bikes on buses

All RTD buses, with the exception of the 16th Street FreeRide, are equipped with front-mounted bike racks. They hold up to two bikes per bus and are available on all routes throughout the day.

Customers are required to be able to lift their bike onto the rack by themselves and are not allowed to lock your bike to the front of the bus.

Bike parking at stations

Some customers choose to leave bikes at stations using free Bike-n-Ride shelters, which provide secure, weather-protected storage for the first or final mile of a trip. Others use secure bike lockers at Park-n-Ride locations and stations for longer-term storage.

Customers planning a Winter Bike to Work Day trip can use RTD’s Next Ride app to check schedules, track trains and buses in real time, and sign up for Service Alerts before heading out the door.

Know before you ride with a bike

  • Bikes and e-bikes ride on buses and trains as space allows and are first-come, first-served.
  • Customers may need to wait for the next bus or train if bike areas or racks are full.
  • Be courteous. Allow other customers to exit and board before loading a bike.
  • Alert the operator before deboarding bus and unloading a bike.
  • Walk bikes through stations and on platforms for safety.

Whether it's Winter to Bike to Work Day or any other morning, RTD is committed to keeping its bike-riding customers moving across metro Denver.
